March Moleskine Madness: Participant Post

This month got super busy on me so I didn’t make 25 pieces, but I did more drawing than the month before so I’ll take that as a small victory.

March Moleskine Madness Day 8: My day as a comic
I was waiting for an interesting day to make a comic. Was hoping to see cute burger guy but my dreams were dashed. Then impatient jerk decided to almost cause a wreck by whipping around me, but he got some instant karma. Also, kitty loves burgers almost as much as I do.

March Moleskine Madness Day 7: Where are you going to travel to next?
I will be going to New Zealand next month and I’m pretty psyched. Here are some things I’ll like to see there (in order from most to least likely, sadly).

Some super ancient Harry Potter fanart, it was a Valentine’s day thing, thus the cheesy pink bokeh in the background. I should get back into making stuff in Illustrator.

March Moleskine Madness Day 5: Fairy Tales
I’m playing catch-up a little with Moleskine Madness. So going back to day 5, I drew Little Mermaid with a steampunk-y twist, instead of a prince/sailor, she falls in love with a deep sea diver. Maybe someday I’ll turn this into a more detailed and steampunky project. For now it’s just a rough drawing.
As I’m kind of terrible at anything very mechanical, I used this submarine from James Gerney’s Dinotopia as a model for my sub. Also my mermaid’s sidekick is a sea turtle cuz they’re awesome.

March Moleskine Madness Day 6: Object (that you take everywhere)
Meet Fernando, he’s a tiny hippo my mom gave to me a long time ago, and he became my little travel buddy. As you can see, he’s logged quite a few miles, and will get another stamp in his tiny passport when he goes with me to New Zealand next month.

Day 4 of March Moleskine Madness: if I had $1 million, I’d live it up in Paris.

March Moleskine Madness Day 3: Family Affair
Eek, this kind of turned into a project. I decided to draw my family tree in an art nouveau style, with my parents and grandparents in a little circle around me, the scenery of Colorado (where my parents met and where I grew up) in the background and me, of course, hanging out with my kitty. I’d love to someday turn this into a larger, more detailed watercolor, but for just a daily drawing I decided enough was enough XD.

March Moleskine Madness Day 2: Your Pet
My pet is Aiko, my cat. She was a stray kitten living in my mom’s friend’s garage and the second I saw her I said “Let’s take her home!”. She’s super friendly and silly and I love her so much.
If I could have an “exotic animal” as a pet, I would want a fox, a sloth, or a red panda for the obvious cute factor.

March Moleskine Madness Day 1: A First
My first concert was a Bonnie Raitt concert at Red Rocks that my parents took me to when I was in junior high. I remember lots of old hippie types, lots of smoke plumes of a very distinct odor, and my dad putting his arm around my shoulder and us swaying to “Angel from Montgomery”.

Nagranowrimo Profile

Name: Lauren (usually some form of ladama online)

Location: Colorado

Website: ladamania.tumblr.com, my “professional online portfolio” is ladamania.com (and desperately needs updating, ugh)

What’s your goal for Nagranowrimo?: January got a little busy on me, so I think I’m going start with the “planner” path (48 pages scripted/laid out), see if I can’t get the “quartermaster” path done as well.

Talk about your Nagranowrimo project: My story is from a past-Nanowrimo attempt, a story of a young woman in late 19th century New York involved with a rich dude with a big secret, there’s some steampunkish themes which I’m worried about since I’m terrible at drawing anything mechanical but hey this is a challenge after all.

What’s your artistic background?: I grew up making art and crafts all the time and took classes whenever I could. I have a BFA in graphic design, but I don’t know, I think college burnt me out a bit and haven’t done art very consistently since. Hopefully Nagranowrimo will jump start that! In addition to drawing, I like painting, and crafty stuff like needle felting and stamp making.

Artistic influences: Whenever I draw I try to channel Arthur Rackham, Tony DiTerlizzi, various Disney animated movies, with maybe some Art Nouveau style mixed in but I don’t know if I’m succeeding in that at all.

Favorite Comics/Graphic Novels: In my formative comic years I was reading a lot of X-Men (Rogue is my goddess!), Sandman, Strangers in Paradise, Witchblade, Rising Stars, Aria, Red Star, Fushigi Yuugi, Inu Yasha and lots more stuff. I admittedly am a little out of the current comic scene but more recent stuff I like is Mouse Guard, the Flight series, Owly, Scott Pilgrim, and Entropia (which I have a personal quest to have everyone read)

Favorite Comic/Graphic Novel Creators: Phil Noto, Joshua Middleton, Kate Beaton, Faith Erin Hicks, Skottie Young, Neil Gaiman of course, everyone who did the graphic novels above, and like 100 other people.

What attracts you to graphic novels, why do you want to make one?: I’ve always been a really visual person and loved illustrations, and then when I discovered comics and graphic novels as a teen, I was hooked. Then I started discovering more independent and non-superhero comics and I was excited to see all the different styles going on and have thought “I want to do that!”

Any other fun/interesting/unusual things about yourself: I minored in Japanese and I lived in Japan for a while teaching English (yet I’ve never really into manga or anime, pretty much limited to a couple series and Ghibli films).

Couple examples of your work:

Here’s something I drew a while ago but it’s kind of the style I want for my Nagranowrimo (probably simplified though)

And here’s a page from my long abandoned attempt at a webcomic
